Lecture notes 2

Study of different accomplishments that design has made for businesses all around the world. It explores all the main aspects in which design can definitely be a value added.

First of all, design is not only about the development of a product. Design constitutes the environment in which people will live in. Thus, the design of companies’ headquarters and retails will impact on the way business will be done in these companies. For instance, Google has built spacious offices where employees can walk in a spacious environment, including numerous conference rooms and lounge places to let any employee make up his mind and think about a future product. Some firms have used design to decorate their stores in order to set a clear image of the brand in customers’ minds. Apple is a perfect example of it, with shops using only black, white or silver with almost no text displayed.

Product design is usually the main expenditure of a business for design. This is the design that customers will see the most and usually in their hands. It will give the final message that the brand wants to communicate to the market. Moreover, innovation is linked with design; any invention needs an adequate design that will make the creation a success. It could come from novel products, engineering design, development of solutions within an industrial system.

Package design is also another important aspect of a product’s perception, it is considered as “the door” of a product, so this door needs to be perfectly compatible with the product itself and the way the customer will touch this package.

Environmental issues have been significantly used in design with sustainable design becoming important. Web design has also become a large sector of design.
