Dog Customs

Ridiculous. This poor little dog is just thinking, “What in the everliving hell is going on? Quick, someone get this shit off me!” On the other hand, the owner is probably thinking, “Oooooo how adoooooorable! Paying $300 for that custom dog wetsuit was toooootally worth it!”

This pooch appears to be a Bedlington Terrier. Believe it or not, this camel haircut isn’t that far off from the standard haircut for this breed. They usually have an especially poofy patch of hair on the bridge of their snout, as well as little poofs of fur hanging at the tips of the ears and tail. However, they do not usually have humps on their backs and harnesses on their faces.

I guess we should add this costume to the list of weird Yoda fan art. Obviously, the owners of these dogs are major nerds (and I don’t mean that in a negative way; some of my closest friends are major nerds). The only question is, who wore it better, the Cockapoo or the Pug? I say pug. His wrinkly face more closely resembles that of the real Yoda

Here’s another dog-pretending-to-be-horse costume, and this one takes it up a notch. Unfortunately, it’s a notch too far in my opinion. I mean, really, do you think this dog enjoys having a freaking harness on its face? No. But I guess sometimes you just feel like dressing your dog up like a character from a Washington Irving short story.

Here are a couple more costumes that make the front of the dog look like an upright human with a dog’s head. It’s kind of cute to see dogs looking like proper humans (since so many don’t understand they’re not human anyway), but I find this style of costume to be a little creepy. In this case particular case, we have Batdog and Superdog. Judging by their sitting positions and keen stares, the owner of these Labrador retrievers is probably just off camera bribing them with treats.

You may think this is a simple, store-bought costume. But notice that the two fake heads look just like the actual dog (and also that they are a little rough around the edges). Obviously, this getup is a custom job, which means someone has way too much time on his or her hands. Hopefully the owner at least won some kind of contest, maybe got a lifetime supply of dog food…something.

As you will see as you move down this list, this type of dog costume is becoming quite popular. Here we have a dog posing as an elf from the appropriately titled Will Ferrell movie, Elf. I like this movie. But I like lots of movies, and I don’t dress my dog up as characters from all of them.

Well, here’s one way to make a Chihuahua seem dignified: put a chivalrous knight on his back. Sure, it’s not a real knight, but when compared to the usual behavior of these little dogs (high pitched yapping or, occasionally, cowering in terror when the wind blows), transporting even a fake member of the round table seems noble.

To get things started, here’s a photo of a pit bull terrier posing as the king of the jungle. I know what you’re thinking: dude, lions don’t live in jungles, they live on the Serengeti. But hey, I’m not in charge of making up colloquial expressions, so cut me some slack. In any case, you have to admit this costume is pretty cute.

People love their dogs. And to an extent, this is understandable. After all, for millennia the species canis famliaris has been selectively bred by the species homo sapiens to be the perfect companion—protective, loyal, and affectionate. Along the way, I think a little of this selective breeding rubbed off on people, too, so that now it’s our nature to return the affection dogs have for us. That being said, it’s one thing to be fond of dogs, and it’s another thing to be so crazy about your dog that you dress it up in elaborate costumes. While I admit that my own pooch has suffered the indignity of sporting a costume from time to time, the poor guy has never had to endure the kind of humiliation some dogs experience on a regular basis. The following list of 13 Hilarious Dog Costumes runs the gamet of dog costumery. From simple and fun to ornate and bizarre, there’s a little bit of everything.

What is the impact of the design business

Everything we see around us has been influenced by design. Design gives creativity and without it things would not be interesting. Design provides innovation for business organisations and discretely makes them interesting and more appealing to customers.

For instance, Chris Bedford, President of Karo group explains how they redesigned the website for Bernard Callebaut, a chocolaterie based in Calgary. Their original website lacked fast navigation and friendly usability, it also lacked in brand presence and was slightly incommunicative (Bedford, 2006).

The aim of the new design was to maintain the brand identity of the chocolaterie, enhance brand experience, improve the site navigation structure and usability, and retail strategy. The design team was keen to know whether the new design could increase the number of orders placed online in order to drive up the online volume sales.

No advertising was done and the website smoothly took place of the old one. When the new figures from the project were released, it appeared that the number of orders online actually increased by 63%. Moreover, the total value of online sales increased by 156%, and the average value of each online sale increased by 62% (Bedford, 2006).

The investment on design for this business organisation was entirely worth it as the return on investment was significant. Therefore, we can affirm that design has had an immense impact on the business of Bernard Callebaut.

To stay above international competition without bringing prices down businesses can enhance design techniques to improve their businesses and gain profits. These days, design is being used in a way that it is improving performance and increasing innovation.

"According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, top innovators generate over 75 per cent of revenue from products not in existence five years ago". Design brings benefits such as increased quality of goods and services, improved production flexibility and reduced materials costs. It also increases exports; over 90 per cent businesses found that their international customers valued design and 86 per cent indicated that design helps them to compete internationally and attracts investment (Lambin, 2010).

Businesses can use design methods and techniques to improve existing products and services. They can also innovate to meet the demand of the consumers for products that do not exist yet.

Designing prototypes to develop new ideas can do this to develop new projects. Also creating products that are in demand to meet consumer needs. Packaging, graphics and communication can also improve the brand and its image.

Lecture notes 1

Presentation of the module, including the attendance policy.
Brief of Project A and task for next week, using “Profiting by design” by Chris Bedford.
Include at least 3 sources in your essay.
Explanation of how to get to the museum of Design. Need info and pictures.

Chris Bedford describes in “Profiting by design” how design is included in business and how businesses put more and more focus on the design aspect than in the past. Different studies have proven that the impact of design on a product’s success is significant and should not be under estimated.

Lecture notes 2

Study of different accomplishments that design has made for businesses all around the world. It explores all the main aspects in which design can definitely be a value added.

First of all, design is not only about the development of a product. Design constitutes the environment in which people will live in. Thus, the design of companies’ headquarters and retails will impact on the way business will be done in these companies. For instance, Google has built spacious offices where employees can walk in a spacious environment, including numerous conference rooms and lounge places to let any employee make up his mind and think about a future product. Some firms have used design to decorate their stores in order to set a clear image of the brand in customers’ minds. Apple is a perfect example of it, with shops using only black, white or silver with almost no text displayed.

Product design is usually the main expenditure of a business for design. This is the design that customers will see the most and usually in their hands. It will give the final message that the brand wants to communicate to the market. Moreover, innovation is linked with design; any invention needs an adequate design that will make the creation a success. It could come from novel products, engineering design, development of solutions within an industrial system.

Package design is also another important aspect of a product’s perception, it is considered as “the door” of a product, so this door needs to be perfectly compatible with the product itself and the way the customer will touch this package.

Environmental issues have been significantly used in design with sustainable design becoming important. Web design has also become a large sector of design.

Lecture notes 3

This lecture has focused on the communication aspect of design.

Company internal: use of newsletter and bulletin. Intranet is now a platform used by every company, which eases communication between employees and between the upper level of the company and its employees.

Company external: product’s shape, brand image, advertisement style, trends launched by brand, sponsorship (including charities)

Use of design to express emotions. Perception helps form a mental picture. For example, the font used in a brand’s logo states an idea of the company, like “The Times” or “Le Monde” newspapers who communicate seriousness and information through the use of colour and font style.

Brief on Project A filed trip, with assignment of famous locations of London for the project

Lecture notes 4

Impact of design on business.
Innovation’s success depends on design, so they are strongly linked.
Design in business = competitive advantage, image, strategy of growth, …
Design as a creative process: modification, improvements, and visionary process. It ends up with the evaluation of the realisation of the product. Illustration of the product.

Lecture notes 5

Impact of design on the economy and the world
  • -       Stimulate innovation: national competitive advantage + politically motivated investment
  • -      Boost national competition: injecting creative responses
  • -      Promote national competencies
  • -      Improvement within the quality of design of products/services + delivery
  • -      Customers’ expectations

Design in weapon development
  • -       Gives the country an advantage over its competitors regarding the weapons market share
  • -       Increase of national’s defence system + offensive

International competition includes several factors:
  • -       National budget deficit/surplus
  • -       R/D
  • -       Consumption level
  • -       Technology
  • -       Social situation

Design can also be used to boost the national demand for a certain type of product. For example, Qatar has a really high rate of building construction (by foreign companies) in the last several years due to its economic boom. Thus,  the national Qatari government has decided to look for companies who can fulfil their construction requirements. “Smart” building technologies are welcomed, including high safety and efficient standards. Innovation and sustainability are words that can now be linked with Qatar, as their government’s goal is to achieve an economic boom, which will not harm the environment. GEZE Middle East, a German building company has won the bid to build a couple of buildings that will include new safety and sustainability systems.

Cool Packagin Design

Daily people are dying throughout the world of diseasescaused by smoking. This package concept shows how close this problem isto us. As every day each smoker carries this problem in his/her pocket. They carry death.

Experiment in cardboard packaging as well as in communication. It represents the content of the product in the simplestt way, both through word and image. The packaging is the same dimension as a 2L milk carton

Basically, the drawings were created during our afternoon monthly designer meetings at DDW. He grabbed a "to go" coffee from a cafe across the street from their studios.  During the meetings, the designer started drawing on the cups as a way to pass the time while they discussed various design topics

Jooze is a fictional company that manufactures fresh fruit juices, catered especially to kindergarten and primary school students. It is a company that believes that healthy eating habits should begin at a very young age.

The shape of the logo is inspired by the shape of a sliced fruit, and the handwritten typeface used is to portray a sense of fun, hands-on personality and characteristic that appeals to kids and toddlers.

Craziest Hotel in the World

10 Craziest Hotels in the World

Capsule Hotel, Netherlands: a hotel made out of a survival pod

Your own survival pod! Escape pod hotel in a city centre dock location. Moored in The Hague , your room is a bright orange survival pod which once saw service on an oil rig platform. Originally built in 1972 they are 4.25 metres in diameter and unaltered apart from the addition of a lock on the outside and an ‘emergency' chemical toilet inside. While not everyone's luxury choice, each pod provides cosy protection from the elements for up to three occupants.

First created for accommodation as an art project in 2004, owner Denis Oudendijk has 8 different models ready for use and is currently working on additional locations in central Amsterdam and Nantes , France .

Everland, Paris: a hotel which parks in unusual places with amazing views

Everland is a hotel with only one room including a bathroom, a king-size bed and a lounge. What makes it so different is that - because it is also an art installation - this hotel travels! The Everland has been ‘parked' in the most unsual places, like the roof-deck of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig, Germany, or the roof of Palais de Tokyo (with a spectacular view on the Eiffel Tower) in Paris.

Considering how unique a night in this hotel is, the price is not so crazy: you can get the only room and the unique view for 333 Euros during the week, 444 Euros during the weekends.

Hôtel de Glace, Canada – an ice hotel opened only during winter

Made entirely of ice and snow, this unique one-story structure has been rebuilt each year since 2000. The 9th season of the Ice Hotel lasted from January 4th through March 29th 2009. The Ice Hotel has become an unparalleled and world-famous winter experience. It takes 5 weeks, 500 tons of ice, and 15,000 tons of snow to craft the Ice Hotel with its ceilings as high as 18 feet, walls covered with original artwork and furniture carved from ice blocks.

Waterworld Hotel, China – an amazing aquatic themed hotel

Atkin's Architecture Group won first prize for an international design competition with this stunning entry. Set in a spectacular water filled quarry in Songjiang , China , the 400 bed resort hotel is uniquely constructed within the natural elements of the quarry. Underwater public areas and guest rooms add to the uniqueness, but the resort also boasts cafes, restaurants and sporting facilities.

Sala Silvergruva, Sweden: a single room hotel inside a silver mine

Picture this A single suite, 155m underground in historic Sala Silvermine, one of the world's best preserved mine settings. (During its heyday, production amounted to more than 3 tons of silver a year and a total of more than 400 tons of silver and about 40,000 tons of lead were extracted - completely by hand!) If you wake up in the middle of the night and have to use the bathroom, make sure you turn right or else you'll end up exploring dark winding galleries, vast caverns and magic lakes.

Das Park Hotel, Austria: a hotel where rooms are made of concrete pipes

A hotel with rooms made of giant concrete sewage pipes might sound a little odd, but this artistic creation can be recreated to provide cheap lodging anywhere. These 9,5 tonne concrete sections are a standard item in near all concrete factories and the oden floors, a really comfortable double bed, minibar and room service through to 1am. For night owls, the reception is open 24hrs. With the amazing view below there is little else needed, except if you're staying in bed past 10am, when pajamas would be a wise thing to wear, as although you can look out - tourists can look in

The De Vrouwe van Stavoren Hotel , Netherlands : a hotel made from recycled wine barrels

The De Vrouwe van Stavoren Hotel in the Netherlands salvaged four wine casks from Switzerland and converted them into rooms. Formerly filled with 14,500 liters of Beaujolais wine from the French chateau, each now holds a modest two-person room with standard amenities and even an attached bathroom and a sitting room.

The one thing that might bother you, if you're not a wine enthusiast, is the smell of wine that the barrels still maintain. All in all the Barrel Hotel, in Stavoren, northern Netherlands , makes for a very pleasurable experience. General rates for a cask room are from 74-119 Euros a night with discounts of up to 75% off depending on season. If you go in the wintertime, a wine cask room can be as low as 18 Euros a night, cheaper than most hostels.

Giraffe Manor , Kenya : a hotel where you dine with a friendly giraffe

This small and exclusive hotel -- surrounded by 140 acres of indigenous forest just outside Nairobi -- is famous for its resident herd of giraffe. It's the only place in the world where you can enjoy the experience of feeding and photographing the giraffe over the breakfast table, at the front door or while you dine, and the giraffes poke their heads through the window.

As well as the giraffe, the property is also home to many species of birds, large families of warthogs and the elusive Bush Buck.

Hotel Im Wasserturm , Germany : a hotel inside a water tower

Rising high above Cologne , this international luxury hotel was once the largest water tower in 19th century Europe . In 1990, French designer Andrée Putman transformed it into an elegant 78-room hotel.

Classified as a heritage site, the timeless modern design still manages to preserve the water-tower architecture and a sense of refuge and protection.

Jumbo Hostel ( Stockholm ): World's First Aircraft Inn

Stockholm is the house of this wacky hotel, the first aircraft inn. An abandoned Boeing 747 jumbo jet has been saved from being trashed metal to become a 25-room hotel sited in Stockholm-Arlanda airport. Each room is bare 65 square ft big and furnished with bunk beds, overhead luggage storage and flat-screen TVs. There is a reception area and a cafe with toilets and showers at the rear of the aircraft, which means that you will have to share! The upper deck is a conference room and the best of all, the cockpit, is where the wedding suite is housed. Not a very comfy hotel I would think, but staying there just to get a feel of it might be cool.

Group Project

This photo has been taken during the process of putting our main idea, the black magic party on the roof of the building of the store Super Super Ficial
As you can see, we are making the walls of the roof in colours to be attractive for the people whom are in the main area, Seven Dials
This is the maquette for our group project
we had to cover the area of seven dials
we ended up choosing supersuperficial store as our main idea
Here we can see the proper seven dials and our idea was to display the store as a magical, cloud, fantasy party that the store throw in the roof of their building, with a big orange T-shirt that everyone can see from far away. Also on the street we have put tshirts that shows the direction for the party
